INVENTIONS AGAINST COVID-19 AND CANCER BY PROF. DR. SEVİM AKYÜZ, HEAD OF IKU DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

As a result of a research carried out within the scope of the joint program signed between the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and TUBITAK, the possibility of using the cationic EQRPR peptide obtained based on the hydrolysis of rice, the bran protein and its mechanisms of action in the fight against cancer and COVID-19 infection were examined.

The research is carried out under the leadership of Jamil Aliyev, Director of the National Oncology Center, Oktay Gasimov, Director of the Biophysics Institute, Prof. Niftali Gojayev from Baku State University, and Professor Sevim Akyüz from the IKU Department of Physics from Turkey.

Recently, extensive research has been done on antiviral and anti-cancer peptides in the fight against viruses and cancer. Bioactive peptides are not toxic to the human body; they also have very effective anti-viral and anti-cancer properties.

According to experts, the peptide can bind to a number of important integrins. It can be widely used in the fight against both SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and cancer.

Preliminary studies in this research lung cancer cells have shown that the EQRPR peptide interacts with the cell membrane.

Key results of the project have been published in the international Journal of Molecular Graphics and Modeling (Evaluation of the anti-cancer and anti-COVID-19 properties of the cationic pentapeptide Glu-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg from rice bran & Through protein and molecular insertion d-isomer analogues).

It was noted that research of important clinical and fundamental importance continues.
